Yahoo’s security vulnerability : the last straw which breaks the camel’s back

On October 24th, according to NBC News, Yahoo has agreed to pay 50 million dollars in damages to 200 million users and provide them with a two-year free credit monitoring service.

Previously, Yahoo had experienced the largest security breach in history. A large number of users’ email and other personal information had been stolen, and about 3 billion Yahoo accounts had been hacked.

The above compensation was proposed by Yahoo in a settlement agreement. Although Yahoo hopes to achieve reconciliation through compensation, the agreement still needs to be approved by the federal judiciary of the United States to take effect.

Yahoo’s lawsuit has been going on for two years. The plaintiff also wanted to hold Yahoo responsible for the digital theft in 2013 and 2014, but the incident was not disclosed until 2016.

The incident had a profound impact on Yahoo, ending the state of Yahoo as an independent company. As a result, former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer also ended her six-year career at the helm.

However, Yahoo’s security breach was discovered after its $4.83 billion digital service sale with US operator Verizon. To this end, Yahoo could only reduce the sale price by 350 million dollars to cover the loss of the brand Verizon and the potential cost of this data breach.
