Now it’s law: new homes are obliged to have solar panels in California

There are some places that seem to be in the future – or they make us feel like we’re stuck in the past. Examples such as those of India or Australia make our initiatives seem rather incipient. This is the case of California, where all homes built from 2020 will obliged to have solar panels.

The decision was unanimously approved by the US State Building Standards Commission, which wants to make California homes more environmentally friendly. All new homes there will have to be at least partially solar powered in two years’ time.

Thicker thermal insulation, more efficient doors and more modern ventilation systems are also in the package to reduce the environmental impact of buildings.

Some Californian cities have argued against the decision, based on the high costs for the installation of the capture panels. The government has remained irreducible, but it prepares a state panel loan plan and a project so that houses that produce more energy than they consume can sell the surplus to the others.

Yahoo’s security vulnerability : the last straw which breaks the camel’s back

On October 24th, according to NBC News, Yahoo has agreed to pay 50 million dollars in damages to 200 million users and provide them with a two-year free credit monitoring service.

Previously, Yahoo had experienced the largest security breach in history. A large number of users’ email and other personal information had been stolen, and about 3 billion Yahoo accounts had been hacked.

The above compensation was proposed by Yahoo in a settlement agreement. Although Yahoo hopes to achieve reconciliation through compensation, the agreement still needs to be approved by the federal judiciary of the United States to take effect.

Yahoo’s lawsuit has been going on for two years. The plaintiff also wanted to hold Yahoo responsible for the digital theft in 2013 and 2014, but the incident was not disclosed until 2016.

The incident had a profound impact on Yahoo, ending the state of Yahoo as an independent company. As a result, former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer also ended her six-year career at the helm.

However, Yahoo’s security breach was discovered after its $4.83 billion digital service sale with US operator Verizon. To this end, Yahoo could only reduce the sale price by 350 million dollars to cover the loss of the brand Verizon and the potential cost of this data breach.

Buskers fear: It turns difficult to perform in the streets of London

Among many issues felt by current societies around the world, there are a few that sounds unbelievable. One in particular stood out this week in the UK, particularly in London. Busking, or street performing, will be judged like an illegal act by several London Councils. According to the launch of new public space protection orders (PSPOs), street musicians will be held responsible for excessive noise and even receive £1000 fines.

Busking is a tradition for a long time, since medieval times, when minstrels and bards were the firsts buskers. Nowadays, it is recognized like an art expression which gives pleasure to people and changes public spaces. Moreover, it’s the main way for many people to make money and survive. There are artists in the bars and restaurants, but also in the streets. Public spaces are the scenes where they can show and share theirs talents.

On the other hand, the situation in London is worrying. It’s still not illegal to busk in the streets, but according to David Fisher, a street performer, councils are attempting to use their new powers to tell them where and how to do their job. Another important key to remember is the fact that two authorities have already adopted some measures. Since 2014, busking in Camden means that street artists need to have a license costing £19 without amplification and £47 with. Hillingdon council as well as Camden has restricted busking in four areas, where buskers are allowed to perform during two two-hour time slots during the day. Those exemples gives inspiration to other councils.

Outside of London

Although, busking in UK is still easy-friendly. Some cities like Cambridge and Liverpool are good examples. With the goal to regulate the activity, Cambridge City Council provides online a kind of code of practice. In terms more polites than his London partners, Cambridge explicite her vision about the subject.

“We don’t license busking, so anybody can set up and perform at any time. But in an attempt to minimise disturbance, we do ask buskers to adhere to a voluntary code of practice”.

jacek-dylag-523026-unsplash.jpg

Photo: Jacek Dylag / Unsplash

All buskers in Cambridge have a guide to busking to download. Before any formal action, it’s really easier to buskers have a conversation with authorities. To give another example, common sense also is the key in Liverpool. Lord Clement-Jones cited in an interview to the Guardian the “extensive and disproportionate use” of PSPOs across the country.

Liverpool introduced a voluntary code of conduct that regulates the level of amplification, where buskers perform and how they approach people, and it worked perfectly well”.

To oppose all recent abuse of authority from London Councils, it’s clear that to ask people is a good idea. University of Westminster MusicTank survey of a thousand of residents in Covent Garden, Portobello Road, Trafalgar Square and others. The results were representatives with 86 percent of tourists and 84 percent of residents favoured busking.

More an issue

With all this in mind, it cannot be forgotten the financial side of this subject. To survive by busking around the world is a great challenge of the 21st century. In cashless times, it’s difficult to make money in the streets. People doesn’t have coins all the time to put in guitar cases. Be busker is understand that some habits have changed. So, why not to accept contactless payments?

Besides all worries about the increasingly prosecute to street musicians, for instance recent actions in London, buskers need to be creative and have patience. It’s a reflex from a modern society built by the capitalism the persecution of arts expressions and artists. Buskers don’t pay taxes in the majority of the cases. Busking really bothered anyone else, but who? All things considered, it’s time to encourage street musiciens and to find out new BB King, Tracy Chapman and KT Tunstall.

Sleeping underwater, a new kind of luxury

Wed, 12/05/2018

Photo: Conrad Hotels &Resorts

Perfectly located on two private islands joined by a footbridge, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, will offer you a heavenly view.

In the unending competition for exotic luxury resorts, it appears that the newest extravagant trend is all about sleeping underwater, not in a submarine or in any kind of boat but in a fully operational underwater resort. It is called “the Muraka” or Coral in the Maldives’ local language, Dhivehi, far from Conrad’s beach villasand over-water bungalows allowing for maximum privacy.

Presented as fully ecological and respectful of the environment it is available at a price of $50 000 per night with a minimum stay of 4 nights including a private boat. This underwater villa was dreamed by Ahmed Saleem, also the architect of the very first underwater restaurant named Ithaa where we can find five stars food at 5 meters of depth at the Maldives’ Rangali Island Resort, he said that “The underwater restaurant, Ithaa, has become very famous. From there, we did a lot of research and saw the need to have an undersea villa. We had to build a lot of technologies into the villa to make sure they are 100% safe at all time the guests are sleeping underwater”.

Photo: Conrad Hotels &Resorts

One of the main attractions of this hotel is Ithaa undersea restaurant. You could have a gastronomic dish while admiring the fishes swimming around you. A beautiful view , a luxurious dinner , submerged by the ocean and all the creatures that live in it, this is definitely one of the main reasons why people who can afford that travel to this destination come here in order to relax.

Rangali Island remains at the heart of innovation when it comes to sea side, and now sea ground resorts, it was the first hotel resort in the Maldives to offer stilt houses above water, and also the first to offer an underwater restaurant and now once again the first to offer a residence sitting at the bottom of the sea.

Built on land by Japan’s Nippura Co and made waterproof by using Shin Matsu Marine sealant already used in the building of Ithaa, the villa was assembled in Singapore and transported on a specialized ship that could moor it to the reef without causing any kind of damage, submerge it into the water and attach it to ten concrete pillars that ensure it will not move or shift during high tides or rough seas, a feat realized by architect Yuji Yamazaki and his firm who also designed a upper level made of glass to observe the waves and the minimalistic interior design; he is quoted as saying “I want guests to feel the solitude, the quietness. They are going to be the only ones sleeping with a view of the ocean”.

Photo: Conrad Hotels &Resorts

This is a computer generated image of the inside of the hotel located on Rangali island in the Maldives. It’s part of a $15 million project. The hotel is two stories tall, the first 16.4 feet are submerged under the Indian Ocean!

To access the residency itself, the guests will be either flown to and enjoy a private sea plane ride landing at their own private jetty or picked up by speedboat that will stay at their disposal until the end of their stay, once arrived, they have the choice between an elevator or a spiral staircase leading them 16 feet down to the bottom of the ocean where their underwater residence awaits them, there they will find a bedroom, a shower, an ocean-facing bathtub, a bar and all other typical components of a hotel room and additional services including a full time butler, a professional chef for all their cooking needs, an infinity pool, a personal gym, a private deck, therapists of all kind, facialists and more, all of that under the sea of course, not to mention the fact that guests instantly receive Hilton Diamond status for staying in the Muraka resort.

Photo: Conrad Hotels &Resorts

Luxurious hotels are a though competition nowadays, each one is trying to find something that will always impress the customers and make their stay worth the money spent. This submerged hotel offers the best view of the ocean while relaxing in your bath or having a coffee in your room.

The Ithaa was already a technological and architectural marvel allowing guests to enjoy luxury food while watching sharks, fishes and the acrylic underwater fauna of the Maldives, but now the guests can now enjoy Mr. Saleem’s dream: an hotel room entirely made of glass where they can spend the night sleeping under the sea and wake up under the waves of the Indian ocean with their own private amenities, specially dedicated staff and round-the-clock services, for a hefty price tag of course. If people can’t afford it, they still can rent one of the floating villas within the Conrad, which are a bit more cheaper.

Why is the gene-editing technology used for babies unforgivable?

sharon-mccutcheon-775538-unsplash

Photo: Sharon McCutcheon / Unsplash

On November 26, 2018, a Chinese biologist at Southern University of Science and Technology, He Jiankui, in an interview with the Associated Press in Hong Kong, claimed that his laboratory had used a genetic editing technique to modify a gene called CCR5 of fertilized eggs of at least seven couples. In addition, a pair of twins were born this month. According to He, this kind of operation can make these children have the natural immunity to AIDS, which is considered as a very important ability in today’s world.

This day is destined to be enshrined in human history. The first and second human beings whose gene had been artificially modified have come to this world when people are still mentally unprepared.

However, this technology is still full of unknown risks. It is not only unscientific but also immoral to try high-risk research on human bodies with little or no health benefits, which is a violation of human dignity and scientific spirit.

heather-mount-607554-unsplash

Photo: Heather Mount / Unsplash

First, on the scientific level, according to the Associated Press, the mother of twins is not AIDS patient at all. Although their father is HIV carrier, his condition has been well controlled after long-term treatment. In this case, as long as the mother pays attention to protective measures during pregnancy, the child will not be infected with HIV at all. In other words, the benefits of this gene-editing operation are few and even negligible.

On the other hand, the risk of this operation is astronomical! Gene-editing technology is a cutting-edge biological technology on the way of booming and rapidly advancing, which means there still exist many entrenched risks to be solved. The main risk is that it is difficult to avoid the so-called “off-target” effect when this technology is applied, which can easily destroy the unrelated normal genes in the human body, suspiciously leading to very serious genetic diseases that are difficult to accurately predict.

To make matters worse, in this incident, it is very likely that the scientists’ genetic modification of the fertilized egg will enter all the cells of the babies, including their germ cells. In other words, the results of this genetic editing will not only affect these children, but also their future generations! The modified genes carried by these children who have been genetically edited will slowly integrate into the entire human population and become part of the human gene pool, which apparently include genes that may have been accidentally injured by “off-target” effect! From this perspective, the worst risk of this genetic editing operation is uncontrollable. And it may take many years and many generations for humans to discover the consequences.

In addition to scientific considerations, society will also face deeper concerns about the future fate of human species. The promotion of gene-editing technology from “treatment” to “prevention” has greatly extended the scope of application of this technology. An obvious confusion is: Where is the application boundary of gene-editing technology? Once the boundaries between “treatment” and “prevention” are broken, the ones between “prevention” and “improvement” will become more blurred.

lucas-vasques-453684-unsplash

Photo: Lucas Vasques / Unsplash

What if parents want their child to get more muscle, higher height or blonde hair? Further, what if they want a child with a high IQ, strong language and analytical skills, and leadership? At that time, will the promotion of genetic editing technology lead humanity off the cliff into darkness for all eternity? Will it destroy the diversity of the human gene pool? Will it make humans become the same without any personal features? More importantly, will it shape eternal inequality?

If some children receive the “improvement” by genetic editing technology, they may have a competitive advantage in everything from appearance to intelligence. More importantly, these advantages have also been written into the genome and can be inherited. In this way, other children may never be able to break the class barrier.

Is genetic editing, a new technology that comes with flowers and applause from the day of its birth, sketching a path to dark hell? Historical experience tells humans that people’s understanding and transformation of themselves and the world may have been temporarily stagnant, but never been reversed.

In general, powerful gene-editing techniques entering the human world, helping people overcome their illnesses and even making them healthier, may all be unstoppable historical trends. But where is the boundary of this technology? Does this technology open Pandora’s Box, or Aladdin’s lamp? At this very moment that is destined to be remembered for all eternity, humans should really give it some thought.
