Women in congress : Breaking stereotypes

          Women made history In this year’s midterm elections. Today, the US Congress has more women representation. More than 100 women were elected to Congress according to Karma Allen a Digital Reporter at ABC News . The number of women in Congress had almost doubled since the last elections.

         Tuesday, November 6th was a historic night for first-time female candidates. In several firsts for the US Congress: Two native American women democrats, Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland, were elected.

         Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar became the first Muslim women in the US Congress. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, 29, the youngest woman in history to be elected to Congress.

And another demographic group also made historic gains: LGBT candidates, Sharice Davids, the first openly LGBT member of Congress from Kansas.

             Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has entered history as the youngest woman to be elected to the US Congress as a Democrat in New York. Before her, Elizabeth Holtzman was the youngest elected Democrat in Brooklyn at the age of 31.

              Originally from Puerto Rico, made her career as a waitress, she worked in a number of restaurants, according to her campaign.

             She obtained degrees in economics and international relations, at the university of Boston, after that she worked at the office of Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts. And worked also for Senator Bernie Sanders 2016, presidential campaign.

             Ocasio Cortez represent the “Socialists” democrats, calling for federal jobs, defending gay and lesbian rights, asking for ending privatization of prisons and for abolishing public college fees. One of the main goals of her campaign, will be the abolition of the Immigration and customs act in the United States.

First Muslim women in Congress: Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar

          Thirty Seven-year old Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar from that state’s 5th District, became the first Somali-American Muslim in the US Congress.

          She was a teenager when she went to the US as a refugee with her family from Somalia, to escape a civil war. Today, she is the first veiled Muslim woman officially elected to serve in Congress in the midterm elections in the United States with the Palestinian origin Rachida Tlaib.

          Democrat in Michigan’s 13th District, Rashida is an American Palestinian, born in 1976 in the United States. Her mother is from the village of Beit Oor al-Fawqa from the West Bank city of Ramallah. While her immigrant father worked for Ford car factories in Detroit, Michigan. He was born in Beit Hanina, east of Jerusalem, and lived in Nicaragua before coming to Michigan.

         Rachida received her degree in political science in 1998. She received a degree in law in 2004. As a lawyer she entered the political arena and was active in social and environmental work in her mandate.

         She, First made history in 2008 when she became the first Muslim woman to be elected State Representative.

          Ilhan Omar, who also makes history as the first Somali-American in the congress, came to the U.S. more than 20 years ago as a refugee. She was born in Mogadishu, when she left hercountry she was only eight years old. She spent 4 years in a refugee camp with her family in neighboring Kenya, and then the family moved to Minnesota.

          Omar, entered politics, she supports free university education and provision of housing for all and reform of criminal justice.

          By winning this parliamentary seat, Omar, replaced democratic Rep. Keith Ellison, who was also the first Muslim elected to Congress.

         Omar, the orphan child turned to a source of strength after living in the refugee camps in Kenya, and after leaving her country, she learned English in less than four months.

         This girl, who matured early, can only be strong. Her success has not been achieved by chance or by accident, but by the insistence on it, without excuses.

           Ilhan Omar said of herself ‘’ I am a Muslim and a black woman who has simply been involved in politics… ‘’ And that ‘’ she was the first non-white woman to represent her congressional mandate and was the first Muslim woman to wear hijab in Congress and the first immigrant to enter it’’ .
She said also that she had decided to run for the midterm elections to show what truly representative democracies should be.
